Silkworm Cocoonery
- An ideal structure for silkworms to cocoon on
Details:
- Our "Cocoonery" is a structure for the silkworm to build a cocoon on. It is constructed of vinyl mesh, and
there are three tubes, each 2.5'' in diameter and 4'' in length.
Silkworms will build their cocoons in these tubes which provide enough space for at least 15 to spin on.
- People often run into problems at the end of the silkworm's lifecycle because they use the wrong material
for cocooning.
- This structure is ideal because it provides maximum airflow and does not allow the fluids excreted by the cocooning/pupating caterpillars
to build up, causing bacteria to develop which slowly kills the pupae.
- Paper towel tubes or egg cartons are NOT ideal for building cocoons on because they are mostly closed and do not allow enough
airflow or evaporation. Moisture and bacteria then accumulate killing the
spinning, pupating silkworms.
